Trip Description - Upper Mustang Trek

A unique trekking trail of Nepal is Upper Mustang Trek. Hidden behind the mountains of Annapurna (8,091 m) and Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), the ancient kingdom of Mustang lies on the border with Tibet. It is very dry because of the rain shadow of the surrounding high mountains. Kali Gandaki rises in the mountains of Mustang. Going south through Mustang, it forms the deepest trench on Earth. Until 1992, foreigners were not allowed to enter the Upper Mustang region. Even today, tourists need a permit to enter this desert-like area of impressive canyons. If requested by a local trekking company, the Upper Mustang Special Trekking Permit will be given by the Immigration Department, while the conservation permit will be given by Annapurna Conservation.

The road from Chele to Samar passes through a strange ravine, opposite to which is the village of Lo Gekhar. Lo Manthang is a century-old settlement at an altitude of 3,730 meters above sea level. It is the capital of the Mustang and is located along an ocher lunar landscape in Mustang district. The old name of the state is Lo, the Tibetan word for south. The residents here call themselves Lopa. They are ethnically Tibetan, practice Tibetan Buddhism and still live according to ancient Tibetan traditions. The Tibetan word Manthang roughly translates to “sphere of desire.”

In the middle of the old village is surrounded by a huge city wall with defense towers, in the middle of which stands the white five-story royal palace, and deserted after the death of the last king. With a little luck, we can experience the Tibetan culture, which is still very much alive here, near one of the many traditional festivals. The location north of the main Himalayan ridge leads to a dry highland climate, an ideal destination also and especially for the summer months.

The second option goes to Lupra (3,000 m) in a little used, beautiful side valley, first with a little steep and steep downhill walk, we reach a little below Ekle Bhatti, then through the Kali Gandaki valley to Jomsom. It is really a literal fate to wander around the blissful natural phenomena housed in the pleasant vicinity of Mustang. The walking distance from Muktinath to Jomsom (2,736 m) is about 19 km. After breakfast, you should leave your room and store your luggage at the hotel and relax in the hotel lobby or explore the surrounding local market for last minute shopping for friends and family until you head to the airport for your flight back home.

Due to limited space at Kathmandu Airport, all airlines have requested to report at the check-in counter three hours before the actual flight departure time. Therefore, we will pick you up from the hotel three and a half hours in advance, as the estimated travel time to the airport is around half an hour.

The accommodation we use may vary depending on our package travel and the range of travel destinations. Before or after the trip you can book comfortable hotels in cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara for your stay. If you book a tea house trekking trip, we will provide a small two-bed room for sharing in the hill lodges which is a basic facility but very clean.

Now, better-equipped lodges are also available in Annapurna and Everest areas but we recommend trekkers to use accommodation above 3500 meters where clean rooms and clean food are readily available. Sometimes a level of flexibility may be required when trekking in remote mountain areas. We believe that you will complete your vacation without any problems and have the trip of a lifetime. If you book camping/trekking, our camping team will manage a comfortable camping site by the river where possible.

There will usually be a dedicated support team on the trip to move luggage and equipment, set up camp, and prepare your food. You will find more detailed information about travel accommodation which is mentioned separately in the lodging section of each vacation package page.

However, you can expect excellent service and high quality in any budget range you choose. You can learn more about different types of travel and their features and the proposed travel price by contacting us directly where we will be very pleased to answer your questions. We always try to choose comfortable accommodation with local character reflecting the best value based on twin share accommodation.

When you book a trip, unless you request a private single room, we will arrange for you to share a twin bed room with a person of the same gender. If you request a private single room, you will need to pay a single room supplementary fee. Please note that during the trek, if the destination is 4000 meters above sea level, only dormitory accommodation with private beds will be available. On trekking trips we try our best but do not promise guaranteed room options. For most of our camping trips, we supply branded two-person tents, including groundsheets.
