Bardiya National Park is the largest national park in Terai spread over an area of ​​968 square kilometers. Located in the Western Terai of Nepal, this park has been established to protect the representative ecosystem and the habitat of the tiger and its prey species. Initially, the small area was gazetted as the Karnali Wildlife Sanctuary in 1976. At that time, 1,500 households in the Babai Valley were relocated outside the park to allow the flora and fauna to flourish.

Trip Description - Bardiya National Park

Bardiya National Park is the largest national park in Terai spread over an area of ​​968 square kilometers. Located in the Western Terai of Nepal, this park has been established to protect the representative ecosystem and the habitat of the tiger and its prey species. Initially, the small area was gazetted as the Karnali Wildlife Sanctuary in 1976. At that time, 1,500 households in the Babai Valley were relocated outside the park to allow the flora and fauna to flourish. In 1982 it was designated Bardiya Wildlife Reserve and in 1984 it was expanded to its present size. The reserve was granted National Park status in 1988. In 1986, 1991, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2017 and 2019, 91 Greater One-horned Rhinos were translocated from Chitwan National Park to Bardiya National Park.

An area of ​​327 km2 surrounding the park was declared a buffer zone, consisting of forests and private lands. The park and the local community jointly manage the buffer zone. Together they initiate community development activities and manage natural resources in buffer zones. The elephant ride offers a different view of the park as it is off the main trail, morning and evening are the best times to go for the ride. Karnali River is a suitable home for Ganges Dolphins. Babai Valley is a majestic place to visit where prominent rhinos, tigers and elephants can be cited in the wilderness. 61 species of mammals, 513 species of birds, 42 species of herpetofauna and 120 species of fish have been found in the park area.

The climate of the park has three distinct seasons namely winter, summer and monsoon. Bardiya National Park region experiences dry weather from October to early April. Days in Bardiya national Park area are warm and nights are cool and pleasant. The temperature rises gradually from April to June and reaches 450 degrees Celsius in May. Hot sticky days give way to monsoon rains in July which last till September.
