Upper Dolpo Trek is a truly adventurous tent trek in one of the most pristine and difficult to access regions of Nepal. Opened to tourism only in the early nineties under relatively strict conditions, the inhabitants of Upper Dolpo have preserved many of their old (Tibetan) traditions and their original way of life. It is a hard trekking tour, three times we have to cross over 5,000 m high passes during this trek.

Trip Description - Upper Dolpo Trek

Upper Dolpo Trek is situated in Dolpa district of western Nepal in a high-altitude land which is culturally and geographically similar to Tibetan because Dolpo is connected to the northern part of Tibet. Most of the trekking destinations of the Dolpo region lie in Shey Phoksundo National Park. It is known as Dolpo in Tibetan language and Dhol-wa in the local dialect which is connected to the rest of Nepal via Juphal airport. The Dolpali are generally followers of Bon, a religion whose origins predate Buddhism but whose modern form is officially accepted as a fifth school of Tibetan Buddhism. The remote region has preserved its old similarity to the Tibetan traditional culture in relatively pure form, making it mainly attractive to Westerners.

In addition, a minimum of two trekkers are required to obtain a trekking permit. This makes Inner Dolpo a very special destination for trekkers. Guest houses are available at popular destinations so camp should be made elsewhere. The walking time during the trek is just a guideline to prepare yourself and it varies from person to person. Phoksundo Lake is also part of Upper Dolpo Trek in Dolpo region that follows the Suli Gaad river through pristine forest to the beautiful Phoksundo Lake. The Phoksundo Lake is 4.8 km long, 1.8 km wide and, at over 600m deep, the deepest lake in Nepal. Dolpo area is a national park, it is full of herbs and wildlife. Many villages here follow the ancient Bon religion, and villagers and monks at monasteries happily explain how it differs from Buddhism.

Accommodation offered during the trip

The accommodation we use may vary depending on our package travel and the range of travel destinations. Before or after the trip you can book comfortable hotels in cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara for your stay. If you book a tea house trekking trip, we will provide a small two-bed room for sharing in the hill lodges which is a basic facility but very clean.

Now, better-equipped lodges are also available in Annapurna and Everest areas but we recommend trekkers to use accommodation above 3500 meters where clean rooms and clean food are readily available. Sometimes a level of flexibility may be required when trekking in remote mountain areas. We believe that you will complete your vacation without any problems and have the trip of a lifetime. If you book camping/trekking, our camping team will manage a comfortable camping site by the river where possible.

There will usually be a dedicated support team on the trip to move luggage and equipment, set up camp, and prepare your food. You will find more detailed information about travel accommodation which is mentioned separately in the lodging section of each vacation package page.

However, you can expect excellent service and high quality in any budget range you choose. We always try to choose comfortable accommodation with local character reflecting the best value based on twin share accommodation.

When you book a trip, unless you request a private single room, we will arrange for you to share a twin bed room with a person of the same gender. If you request a private single room, you will need to pay a single room supplementary fee. Please note that during the trek, if the destination is 4000 meters above sea level, only dormitory accommodation with private beds will be available. On trekking trips we try our best but do not promise guaranteed room options. For most of our camping trips, we supply branded two-person tents, including groundsheets.

Mess tent, kitchen tent, toilet tent, service plates, bowls, and all necessities are provided. Members of the mountaineering travel group are requested to manage according to the options given on the website.
