Trip Description - Thorong La Pass Trek

The Thorong La Pass Trek is a high pass trek within the Annapurna Conservation Area and  Marshyangdi river valley. In general, a guide for this trek in Nepal’s Annapurna Circuit is an invaluable requirement for safety management. At an altitude of 5,416 meters above sea level, this pass is the most difficult place for trekking in the Annapurna circuit. At this altitude, only half of the oxygen is available at sea level. This means that every step you take makes you feel like you are running a marathon. The Short or Half Annapurna Circuit is a main part of the world famous Annapurna Circuit Trek and we suggest this trek for those with only a two weeks holiday available.

We trek the most scenic section of the classic Great Annapurna Circuit Trek or Round Annapurna Trek. Even on the short Annapurna trek we start in the green, subtropical lowlands and work our way up to Thorong La (5,416 m) via Marshyangdi above Manang. Then we descend into the valley of Kali Gandaki, which is here the deepest valley in the world. Our trek takes us through the shrine of Muktinath to Jomsom, the final point of our journey of this trek. From there we will return by the flight to Pokhara and Kathmandu crossing the 8 thousand meter high peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

At the end of this trek, if any of you have time, you can extend your vacation by adding a 2 night 3 day jungle safari package tour to Chitwan National Park.

Acclimatization is crucial when ascending to high altitudes to reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Experts recommend that travelers embarking on the Annapurna Circuit practice walking at the high altitude of Manang, as the trek will continue at a higher elevation starting tomorrow.

Manang, with its stunning natural surroundings, provides an excellent opportunity for acclimatization. On a pleasant day in Manang, a short trip to Khangsar can be a great alternative trek. Additionally, trekkers can opt for a brief walk to Manang’s Bhojo Monastery or Gangapurna Lake on their rest days in Manang Village.

Today, our trek will commence early in the morning. The trail is generally manageable throughout the year, although it can be challenging due to strong winds in the higher elevations. As we ascend to a height of 5,416 meters above sea level, the majestic Dhaulagiri comes into view.

Following the pass, the trail becomes less steep, leading through grasslands and meadows before reaching Muktinath. Muktinath holds religious significance in Hinduism, representing a place of Nirvana with temples and numerous monasteries, making it a sacred destination for both Hindus and Buddhists. The Jwala Mai Temple, featuring a waterfall and eternal flame, along with a holy water stream pouring 108 water spouts, is a major attraction that draws thousands of pilgrims annually. The journey from Thorong Phedi to Muktinath (3,780 m) takes about eight to nine hours. Once there, you can rejuvenate and have free time for personal activities. Enjoy an overnight stay at Hotel Grand Shambala or a similar standard lodge in Muktinath.

Following this, today’s trek will commence. For Hindus, this region is known as “Mukti Kshetra,” signifying a place of liberation or salvation. We’ll also relish the breathtaking view of the Dhaulagiri peak.

From Muktinath, we follow a trail that is part of the Jomsom trek, descending through meadows, streams, and fruit trees until we reach Kagbeni. After exploring the old village, we continue our descent. Moving onward from Kagbeni, we trek to Jomsom, entering the Kali Gandaki valley. The journey to Jomsom (2,750 m) from Muktinath through Kagbeni takes approximately six hours. Once there, you can freshen up and enjoy free time for your personal activities. Accommodation offered during the trip

The accommodation we use may vary depending on our package travel and the range of travel destinations. Before or after the trip you can book comfortable hotels in cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara for your stay. If you book a tea house trekking trip, we will provide a small two-bed room for sharing in the hill lodges which is a basic facility but very clean.

Now, better-equipped lodges are also available in Annapurna and Everest areas but we recommend trekkers to use accommodation above 3500 meters where clean rooms and clean food are readily available. Sometimes a level of flexibility may be required when trekking in remote mountain areas. We believe that you will complete your vacation without any problems and have the trip of a lifetime. If you book camping/trekking, our camping team will manage a comfortable camping site by the river where possible.

There will usually be a dedicated support team on the trip to move luggage and equipment, set up camp, and prepare your food. You will find more detailed information about travel accommodation which is mentioned separately in the lodging section of each vacation package page.

However, you can expect excellent service and high quality in any budget range you choose. You can learn more about different types of travel and their features and the proposed travel price by contacting us directly where we will be very pleased to answer your questions. We always try to choose comfortable accommodation with local character reflecting the best value based on twin share accommodation.

When you book a trip, unless you request a private single room, we will arrange for you to share a twin bed room with a person of the same gender. If you request a private single room, you will need to pay a single room supplementary fee. Please note that during the trek, if the destination is 4000 meters above sea level, only dormitory accommodation with private beds will be available. On trekking trips we try our best but do not promise guaranteed room options. For most of our camping trips, we supply branded two-person tents, including groundsheets.

Mess tent, kitchen tent, toilet tent, service plates, bowls, and all necessities are provided. Members of the mountaineering travel group are requested to manage according to the options given on the website.
