The word Muktinath is formed by two words, the first word is Mukti and the second word is Nath. It is a universal truth that “Mukti” means “salvation or nirvana” and “Nath” means “God or Guru”. Salvation is of great importance to all the spiritual people of the South Asian subcontinent. The Sanskrit name Muktinath is a religious overtone in itself and a kind of emotional circle for devout Hindus. The name is a synthesis of two words – (salvation provider) is such a sacred place, where thousands of devotees gather to attain salvation (freedom) from the cycle of birth and rebirth. It is the dream of every Hindu to attain liberation from this cycle of repeated births.

This world is “Maya” (illusion) and the sooner you get out of it the better, and Hindus believe that Muktinath’s philosophy will help you achieve that goal. It has been called Muktinath ever since. The Hindus call it Muktikshetra (salvation place), one of the four religious sites. Many Shaligrams (Ammonites) found here on the Muktinath pilgrimage are worshiped by Hindus as incarnations of Lord Vishnu. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu became Shaligrams due to the curse of Vrinda. The Muktinath temple is open all year round but thousands of pilgrims gather here to celebrate the festival, especially on Rishi Tarpani, Ram Navami and Vijayadashami.
