Janakpur Dham or Janakpur is a sub-metropolis of Dhanusha District, Madhes Province, Nepal. The city is a center of religious and cultural tourism. Janakpur, the district headquarters of Dhanusha district, is also the capital of Madhes province of Nepal. The Janakpur city was founded in the early 18th century. According to tradition, the narrator points to the old city of the region known as Janakpur Dham, which was the capital of the Videha dynasty that ruled the ancient region of Mithila. Janakpur is located about 225 kilometers southeast of Kathmandu. As of 2015, the city’s population was 173,924. The Janakpur city had a population of 195,438 in 2021. Janakpur is currently the most populous sub-metropolis in Nepal. Nepal Railway runs between Janakpur and Jayanagar in India. Temple of Janaki is a Hindu temple in Janakpur, Nepal, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Sita. The temple is an example of mixed Hindu Nepali architecture It is often considered the most important model of Mughal architecture in Nepal.
